May is the busiest month of the year for me at my work, and there's about a two week period in the middle of the month when it's all I can do to just go to work and come home and collapse exhausted on the couch. This has been that two week period, and that's why you haven't heard from me for a bit.
But that doesn't mean things haven't been happening, and I have much to report! Watch this space over the next week for several updates.
Let's start with results on the Photographic Society of America front. I have two more salon results to report: Jadran Circuit, in Montenegro, and Pirin, in Bulgaria. Jadran I entered this year for the first time, but it's my third year in a row for Pirin, because they are one of the few salons to have a specific category for "Nude." I'm pleased by the results at both places, because while I didn't receive major awards, I did get at least some recognition both places, and in both cases, several photos were accepted for the very first time.
So without further ado, here are the figurative results at Jadran:
- "Of Earth" (Open Monochrome PIDM), Astrid Kallsen, Discovery Park, March 2023: Honorable Mention, and accepted (for the first time) in all three judgings. I only photographed Astrid two months ago, and have not yet sorted and edited her full set, but her photos were so good that I did pick out a few obvious favorites and rush them into circulation. Three out of three judges agree that these are great images!
- "Rapture" (Open Monochrome PIDM), Astrid Kallsen, Discovery Park, March 2023: Accepted in two judgings. Another fantastic image accepted for the first time!
- "Emerald Lake" (Open Monochrome PIDM), Katlyn Lacoste, Mount Rainier National Park, July 2020: Accepted in two judgings. Ironic that the popular version of this photo, named for its color, would be black and white! Accepted for the first time.
- "As above, so below" (Open Color PIC), Lior Allay, Gas Works Park, March 2019: Accepted in two judgings. The black and white version of this has already been popular, but personally I love the color version even better. This is an HDR interpretation with some enhanced color and I think it's beautiful and ethereal.
- "Negative space" (Open Monochrome PIDM), Olinka Lickova, Seattle, February 2019: Accepted by one judging. Yet another new photo, and I'm pleased that this more abstract figurative concept was recognized.
- "Athena on the beach" (Open Color PIDC), Astrid Kallsen, Discovery Park, March 2023: Yet another from Astrid's set, accepted for the first time! Remember from Greek mythology that Athena was often described as a redhead. I love the color in this image.
- "Gothic sundial" (Open Color PIDC), Psychopomp, Seattle, October 20212: Accepted in one judging. Among all the new images, this one's an old classic!
Of Earth (Open Monochrome PIDM) (Salon HM, Accepted x3)
Rapture (Open Monochrome PIDM) (Accepted x2)
Emerald lake (Open Monochrome PIDM) (Accepted x2)
As above, so below (Open Color PIDC) (Accepted x2)
Negative space (Open Monochrome PIDM) (Accepted)
Athena on the beach (Open Color PIDC) (Accepted)
Gothic sundial (Open Color PIDC) (Accepted)
Now, to Pirin. This salon only had one judging:
- "Mother of shadows" (Open Monochrome PIDM), Xhibited, Seattle, February 2023: IAAP Ribbon. The star of this batch of entries is one that I personally love, made recently and now recognized by the International Association of Art Photographers.
- "Rapture" (Open Color PIDC), Astrid Kallsen, Discovery Park, March 2023: Look familiar? This is the color version of the one accepted in black and white at Jadran. I love this image so much, in both versions! Entered and accepted for the first time.
- "Together" (Open Monochrome PIDM), Lior Allay and Cyndical, Discovery Park, June 2017: Another image I love, even though Instagram thinks its too sexual--more about that in a future post...
- "Survivor II" (Portrait PIDC), Tracy Banks, Seattle, April 2013: An old one but a great portrait, and I'm happy it was recognized.
- "Twice the beauty" (Open Color PIDC), Invy Rose, Mazama Ridge, August 2022: Invy's images never disappoint, especially when combined with great scenery!
- "Duty station" (Open Monochrome PIDM), Spencer Parks, July 2016: I believe this is the first time this one has been accepted in its black and white version.
- "No neighbors" (Nude PIDC), Katlyn Lacoste, Ohanapecosh, March 2022: If you've been keeping track, this is the only photo accepted in the "nude" category, which is a disappointment given that that is my specialty. And a photo universally acknowledged as exceptional, not anything new. Other photos submitted but not accepted include a classical pose by Katlyn Lacoste and some pretty innovative images of Lior Allay and Lillias Right. Oh well!
